This is a composite image of SNR 0509-67.5, the remnants of a Type 1a supernova that lies 160,000 light years away in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). It was created using data from both the Hubble Space Telescope and the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The 1a supernova that created SNR 0509-67.5 happened nearly 400 years ago for viewers on Earth. The spectacular bubble of gas, which is 23 light-years across, is expanding at an incredible rate of 5,000 kilometres per second.
