On this day, 10 June 1918, a mass rally of African workers took place in Johannesburg. They were protesting against the jailing of all 152 African municipal workers who had gone on strike for a shilling a day increase in pay. Radicals attempted to organise a general strike the following month, but it was called off, although thousands of miners did not hear about the cancellation and so walked out anyway.
