Happy birthday to Barbara Chase-Riboud, who was born on this day in Philadelphia. In the late 1960s, Chase-Riboud began creating a series of sculptures dedicated to the Civil Rights leader Malcolm X. She created this monumental sculpture by combining angled bronze forms with bundles of wrapped and knotted fibers. By harmonizing these contradictory materials, she creates associations between rigid and supple, heavy and light, horizontal and vertical, alluding to the struggle for and beauty of cultural integration. See this work newly installed in our Vaulted Walkway.
