International Women’s Day

ashmoleanmuseum:

Today is International Women’s Day!

This beautiful still-life painting is by Dutch artist Rachel Ruysch – one of few women artists to feature in our Dutch Still Life collection of over 90 paintings. Ruysch was born in 1664, and became one of the most famous female artists of the Dutch Golden Age. She had a long and successful career as an artist, painting from the age of 15 to 83, and producing over 250 works. In 1699, when her family moved to the Hague, she was the first woman to be offered membership in the Confrerie Pictura – an academic club of artists.

Through the lens of art history, Ruysch is considered one of the best Dutch still life artists of all time, with no 18th-century artists matching her skill.  She had a remarkable understanding of drawing and painting techniques, and paid extensive attention to detail. Ruysch’s style of painting could be seen as an early form of ‘Photoshopping’ – instead of painting life as it was, she painted life in a curated way to create the most perfect composition and image.
